US Election 1872 Map

In 1872, Ulysses S. Grant easily won re-election, sweeping nearly the entire country. His Republican support stretched across the North, the Midwest, and much of the West. This left only a few pockets in the South and along the East Coast to the opposition.

The 1872 election saw Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) win a second term in a landslide. This election was unique because the Democratic challenger, Horace Greeley, died after the popular vote but before the Electoral College met. This led to his electoral votes being scattered among several other candidates.

Election Summary
- The Winner: Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) won 286 electoral votes (81%).
- The Opposition: Following Horace Greeley’s death, his votes were split among Thomas Hendricks (42), B. Gratz Brown (18), Charles Jenkins (2), and David Davis (1).
- Popular Vote: Grant received 55.5% (3,597,132) compared to the Democratic ticket’s 44% (2,834,125).
- Participation: All states, including those previously in rebellion, participated in this election, though 14 electoral votes (from Arkansas and Louisiana) were ultimately not counted.
