US Election 1836 Map

In 1836, the presidency was wide open as Martin Van Buren ran to succeed Andrew Jackson. The election was unusual because the opposition, the Whig Party, ran multiple regional candidates. On our US election 1836 map, Van Buren’s strength is clear across the South and much of the East. But the Whigs won several northern and border states with their different candidates.
