US Election 1840 Map

By 1840, the political scene had shifted dramatically. The Whig Party rallied behind William Henry Harrison. They ran a campaign full of slogans to appeal to ordinary voters. Martin Van Buren, the incumbent Democrat, struggled against an economic downturn that had left many Americans frustrated. Looking at our election map, Harrison’s support dominates the North, the West, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic. But Van Buren held on mainly in the South.
