Blue covers nearly the whole map again in 1940. Franklin D. Roosevelt won a third term, defeating Republican Wendell Willkie. Most of the country stayed solidly Democratic, with only parts of the Midwest and Northeast voting red.

Defeating Wendell Willkie (Republican), Roosevelt maintained his hold on the presidency as international tensions escalated leading into World War II.
