Only parts of the South and a few northeastern states stayed blue. Our map shows a nation comfortable with a steady hand that had guided it through the early Cold War years.

The 1956 Presidential Election was a rematch of the 1952 contest, resulting in an even larger landslide victory for incumbent Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican) over Adlai Stevenson (Democrat). The map shows Eisenhower’s broad appeal during a period of economic prosperity and relative international stability.

- The Challenger: Adlai Stevenson (Democrat) finished with 73 electoral votes (13.5%).
