US Election 1976 Map

In 1976, the election map looked totally backwards from today. Jimmy Carter swept the South while Gerald Ford took California and the West. Our US election of 1976 map shows the Midwest was split. But it still gave Carter the win.

The 1976 Presidential Election was a close contest following the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and the pardon of Richard Nixon. Jimmy Carter (Democrat) defeated the incumbent Gerald Ford (Republican) by reclaiming much of the South and winning key industrial states in the Northeast.

Election Summary
- The Winner: Jimmy Carter (Democrat) secured the presidency with 297 electoral votes (55.2%).
- The Incumbent: Gerald Ford (Republican) received 240 electoral votes (44.6%).
- Popular Vote: Carter won 50% (40,830,763) to Ford’s 48% (39,147,793).
- Faithless Elector: One Republican elector in Washington cast an electoral vote for Ronald Reagan instead of Ford.
- South Reclaimed: Carter won almost every state in the South (except Virginia), representing the last time a Democrat swept the region to this extent.
